What Is Reverse Osmosis Water?

Reverse osmosis is an advanced filtration process that forces water through a semi-permeable membrane at high pressure, stripping out dissolved solids, minerals, organics, and impurities at the molecular level. The result is water with 95–99% of dissolved minerals removed, making it pure enough for virtually all industrial applications.

Alberta groundwater is notoriously hard, with high concentrations of calcium and magnesium that cause scale in equipment and interfere with chemical processes. RO water eliminates that problem entirely.

These terms are often used interchangeably in industrial contexts and refer to the same end result: water with dissolved mineral ions removed. Reverse osmosis is the most common method used to achieve this in industrial settings. When you request RO water, deionized water, or demineralized water, what matters most is your specific purity requirement and the target level for minerals like chlorides, calcium, magnesium, or heavy metals.

Municipal water is treated for safe drinking, not for industrial process purity. Alberta's groundwater and municipal supply are notoriously hard, as they are high in calcium and magnesium. These contents cause scaling in boilers and heat exchangers, corrosion in equipment, sediment and discoloration in chemical blends, and inconsistent product quality. RO water removes these minerals, protecting your equipment and ensuring consistent results.

TDS stands for Total Dissolved Solids. It is the total weight of all minerals, salts, and metals dissolved in a given volume of water, measured in mg/L (or parts per million). A low TDS indicates high-purity water with minimal dissolved content. For most industrial processes, TDS is one of the primary specifications used to confirm water quality meets requirements.

Electrical conductivity measures water's ability to conduct an electric current, and it's directly tied to mineral content. Pure water conducts electricity poorly; the more dissolved minerals present, the higher the conductivity reading. EC is measured in micro-Siemens per centimetre (μS/cm) and is one of the fastest, most reliable ways to monitor RO water purity in real time. Novamen uses continuous EC measurement during production to ensure consistent quality.

The two are different.  Distilled water is produced by boiling water into steam and condensing it back into liquid, leaving contaminants behind. Ultrapure water (UPW) goes several steps further, combining RO, deionization, ultrafiltration, and UV treatment to reach near-absolute purity (18.2 MΩ·cm resistivity), and is used almost exclusively in laboratory and high-precision manufacturing settings. Novamen's RO water is industrial-grade and appropriate for the vast majority of industrial applications, but is not intended for laboratory analytical use.
